Call For Participation in Poster Session

Introduction:

Knowledge has become the key strategic asset for the 21st Century. Every organization that values knowledge must invest in developing the best strategy for identifying, developing and applying the knowledge assets it needs to succeed. This will enable them to learn, create new knowledge, and apply the best knowledge much faster.
Every individual who wishes to successfully participate in the rapidly growing global knowledge community must now consider the development of their personal knowledge management competencies as an ‘essential life skill’ for the 21st Century. That is why Knowledge Management is important for us as students to know about and that is why there is a Student Day at the Workshop on Knowledge Management Capacity in Africa, which will be in January 2012, that is dedicated for students’ participation .
The idea of the Student Day is to allow the students to participate in such big events and show the world their potential. It is a chance for them to know and apply what they know the best, and link to the best of the rest, through knowledge and ideas sharing with their colleagues from different countries as well as with the experts in the field.
The goal of this call is to encourage Students from different universities to present their work and project ideas to the workshop participants who include other students, as well as researchers and practitioners from around the world. If you wish to participate in this Poster Session you are required to provide a Title, Your Name and University and a Paragraph describing your presentation. This presentation can be about a project you worked on, a software you developed, or even a research or development idea you plan for the future! You will present your work/idea as a poster on the first day of the workshop (4th January, 2012) as part of the poster session.
There will be a prize for the best poster.

Poster Session Topics:
We are particularly interested in student projects in the area of knowledge management, information and communication, as well as your innovations in building software systems to support any of the following five sectors: Education, Health, Environment, Business and Governance. We are also interested in ideas and projects on information and communication technologies utilization for development.

Second Planning Meeting

The second planning meeting took place on June 12th at Garden City College. The meeting was attended by 19 members from the coordination committees. The main discussion points included:

(1) The meeting started by a welcome to, and self-introductions by, the new members who joined the planning efforts. It was noted that the workshop community is continuously growing and that the scientific review was formed in preparation for the submissions in July.
(2) The progress report included the activities achieved since the last planning meeting. The focus of the past month was on funding and publicity, that we need to establish the list of sponsors by July as well as engage in KM awareness through targeting groups/individuals to encourage.
    (a) Sponsorships follow ups with Kenana, DAL, National Information Centre, EpiLab, Sudani. A list of possible sponsors will be re-circulated on email for possible contacts in these institutions and more volunteers to follow-up with them.
    (b) KM awareness activities include scheduled participations in the Nile and the British Council forums in June (by Elhadi) and July (by Gada) respectively. Also, we will utilise a number of upcoming student events at the CS/IT depts. at U. of Khartoum to engage with the existing workshop community and those who expressed interest.
(3) The scientific programme will form shape when we reach the submission deadline, however, we have contacts with regard to a set of discussion sessions on different themes. These will hopefully materialise into proposals. Follow-up with current contacts and working on additional sessions are important.
(4) A call for additional members to join the working groups. Especially low in membership is the social programme, public relations and communications groups. We formed a steering group from nominated coordinators of working groups from the last meeting, in addition to our active membership at this stage.

Discussion Highlights:

The first planning meeting was held at the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences (University of Khartoum) on Thursday 21st April, 2011. The agenda included an update on the status of planning three weeks on from the first CfP on April 1st. The topics that were focused upon in the discussion included budget and sponsorships, scientific and social programmes, and communication and publicity. The main recommendations that came out of the meeting can be summarised in the following:
  1. There is need to engage in KM awareness activities among the planning committee membership and with the larger community.
    • Organise a KM awareness course
    • Designing tailored messages to the different sectors
    • Participate in public forums (e.g. British Council, DAL Group, University of Science and Technology)
  2. The list of organisations to approach for sponsorships was expanded to include a number of NGOs, Ministries and Universities. Budget needs working out in detail.
    • Other organisations that work on one of the workshop's themes and that have the capacity to organise discussion sessions (e.g. EpiLab for KM in Health) can be approached to fund that particular session.
  3. Coordination of workshop planning activities was divided into:
    • Public Relations Group. Coordinator: Dr. Manar ElSheikh (University of Khartoum)
    • Financial Administration Group: Coordinator: Mr. Gamal Ahmed (Garden City College)
    • Scientific Programme Group. Coordinator: Mr. Husam Mustafa.
    • Social Programme Group. Coordinator: Ms. Hadia Mahmoud (University of Khartoum)
    • Communication Group. Coordinator: Dr Gada Kadoda (Garden City College/University of Khartoum)
  4. Saturdays are suitable for General Planning Meetings. Need to accommodate time difference for members who can skype from Malaysia and US.

First Call for Participation

Knowledge, as a valuable resource, creates opportunities for sound governance, socio-economic development, service delivery and innovation capability in Africa. The new era of knowledge management (KM) on the continent brings challenges as well as opportunities for utilizing, both traditional and contemporary, knowledge bases. What are the enabling policies, infrastructures, mechanisms and strategies for performing KM in the African context? Which techniques, methodologies, technologies and networks can add value to our KM initiatives? How can KM act a catalyst for development and innovation in Africa?

The aim of this workshop is to discuss the issues that influence the effective implementation of KM initiatives, drawing on the experiences of pioneer organizations, and on the knowledge of international and regional experts. Engaging interdisciplinary, applied and theoretical minds on best practices and lessons learnt relevant to Africa, is a major goal of the workshop. Researchers, practitioners, private and public institutions, and civil society organizations concerned with knowledge and its use are encouraged to participate.

Papers and proposals for panel discussions are particularly invited on KM applications in the following five themes: Education, Health, Environment, Business and Governance. We are also interested in ideas and success stories on KM utilization in development themes such as poverty eradication and wealth generation, gender equality and empowerment, technology transfer and innovation, small and medium enterprises, institutional development and capacity building. Contributions addressing areas potently related to KM such as organizational learning, change management, intellectual capital and ethics, are welcome. Papers/proposals on KM support for indigenous knowledge systems will receive special consideration.
